January is less than 8 weeks away. The best time to convert clients from a PEO relationship is the beginning of January.

Employee leasing companies (PEO's) are continuing to feel a squeeze on profits. State unemployment tax rates continue to go up as worker's compensation rates continue to go down. Combined with the loss of leased employees due to the downturn in construction, the future doesn't look good for most PEO's.

There has already been consolidation occurring. It was recently announced that Selective HR Solutions has been purchased by Alpha Staffing.

The national health care debate also adds to the uncertainty of the PEO's future. The bills that have been discussed call for a penalty for employers with 50 or more employees that do not provide health insurance. At the same time there are incentives for employers with less than 25 employees. Remember, "Where there is confusion there is opportunity".
