E-Verify To Be Required In 2009 for Federal Contractors
A new rule will take effect Sept. 8, 2009 which pertains to new contracts with federal contractors and subcontractors. These contracts will include clauses which state that the employers are required to use the E-Verify system to verify that their employees are eligible to work legally in the United States. There are exceptions to the rule which include the amount of the contract and the types of goods involved.
What IS E-Verify?
E-Verify is a free service provided by the Department of Homeland Security United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. It is an internet-based tool in which you use information from an employee’s Form I-9 to verify his or her eligibility to work in the United States. This does not pertain to citizenship status.
If you are not a federal contractor, you can still participate in the system at no charge. There are nearly 100,000 users already.
